 "Good, Could Be Better" 2009-01-20
By Sharon Huston (Dallas, TX)
Assembly was overall quite easy, excepting (as Joe Saylor noted) the cams. The desk shipped in eight pieces, not counting all the little hardware, so it was pretty simple to figure out. Aside from the horrible cams, the biggest problem I had was the spreader bar. There weren't any labels to indicate which end is the left end, and believe me it makes a difference.

I love the double-wide keyboard drawer; it holds the keyboard and my Wacom tablet with plenty of room to spare. Nice, smooth, easy glide-out. The photos don't really show this well, but there is an organization tray that sits behind the keyboard. It worries me because it isn't secured to the desk, and I'm wondering how long it will take me to knock it off. (The keyboard drawer is really a shelf, with nothing at the back to keep the tray from hitting the floor. On the plus side the drawer is pretty heavy. I also have Gorilla Glue if it becomes an issue.)

I'm not crazy about the glass. I don't know if it's saftey glass or not, which is worrisome. I also don't want my desk clutter visible to the outside world, and I hate the constant dusting glass seems to need. I'll probably replace the glass as soon as possible.

Lastly the desk promised cable management. Um, not. There is one small hole for the keyboard, but no true cable management. Don't make the mistake I made -- I though in the picture that the little holes were for cables. Those aren't holes; they're cams. (The desk came with cam covers, I don't understand why they didn't put them on before photographing.) And no -- the leg might look hollow, like you could just lay your wires in it, but that's not the case.

GOOD:

Overall Design

POOR:

Glass Top

Bad cable management

Would I recommend to friends? Probably not.

"Missing parts and difficulty assembling..." 2009-01-08
By Joe Saylor (San Diego, CA)
OSP Designs MD25 Meridian Black Finish SOLID WOOD Computer Workstation Desk With Glass Top

This is a review for the OSP Designs MD25 Meridian Glass Top Computer Desk:

First off let me say that once assembled this is a very beautiful desks. The glass top with the Black wooden frame looks very sleek and classy without being too modern. It's very difficult to find desk with a large keyboard tray and this is one of the few that I found with one. It has more than enough room for your keyboard and mouse as well as leaving extra room for workspace on the tray, and storage in the back allowing you to leave your desk top less cluttered.

When I first opened the box and saw that there was only a one page diagram for instuctions I knew there were going to be problems. The parts arrived relatively unscathed with only a minor chip along the edge of one piece that isn't visable once the desk was assembled.

Undaunted by the shoddy instructions, having constructed many online purchased furnature previously, I set to work. The first thing I noticed were the wooden dowels, I've used these things before, they should fit snuggly into the pre drilled holes and usually require a rubber mallet (or a regular hammer used gently) to insert fully. That was not the case with these ones. They simply sat in the holes with plenty of wiggle room on either side. This is when I first became worried about the construction of this desk. Next as I'm lining up my cam screws I realise that they gave me *exactly* the number of screws needed. This is bad business practice, anyone who has ever put furniture together at home knows it's really easy to break a screw or dowel or simply get a dud one that didn't come off the assembly line quite right or that got bent in shipping etc. This is why *most* places provide you with liberal spare parts in case something goes wrong. Well not OSP designs apparently.

Again thankfully I'm familiar with this sort of furnature construction because the instructions for installing the camlocks and camscrews were vague at best. And my previous worries about the short supplies were confirmed when I was indeed short a camlock... Thankfully I had a couple extra from a previous project and was still able to put the desk together.

I dont know what it is about the camlock system but I always seem to have problems with these things and this desk seemed a lot worse than usual. The usual problem I have with them is that you are "suppose" to turn the cam lock 180 degrees in order to "lock" the cam screw in place. Well you'd need to have the strength of an ox to turn some of these with a manual screw driver and if you use a power screw driver you risk completely demolishing the cheap metal that the camlock is made out of. Well not only did I have those usual problems but I had the additional problem of some of the cam locks just being completely loose when you turned them. This is a serious problem considering as I mentioned previously the wooden dowels I put in early aren't really doing jack to hold the desk together because they were too loose in their predrilled holes, they're really doing nothing more then providing a tiny bit of support, but nothing in so far as holding the desk together, so I need my camlocks to their job.

Long story short after much fuss I managed to get *most* of the camlocks to stay in tightly, there are still a few I'm worried about. Needless to say I'll be careful moving this desk around knowing that all the pieces are not locked into place as well as they should be.

Cons:

-Missing Parts

-Zero extra Parts

-Wooden Dowels do not fit snuggly

-Camlocks and screws also did not all fit snuggly

Pros:

-Beautiful Desk once Assembled

-Fast shipping

-Wood and Glass arrived relatively undamaged

-Large keyboard tray and back of tray storage is a huge bonus

Overall, don't order this desk if you don't have experience with furniture construction as the directions are pretty much useless. Be prepared to either order extra parts or have extra parts on hand. 3 stars still because it is a very nice looking and functional desk.
